This astounding and rare pictorial map is by Edward Bawden and Thomas Derrick, and celebrates the British Empire Exhibition - which was opened on this day in 1924 by King George V. • The British #Empire contained 58 countries at that time, and only Gambia and Gibraltar did not take part. Its official aim was "to stimulate trade, strengthen bonds that bind mother Country to her Sister States and Daughters, to bring into closer contact the one with each other, to enable all who owe allegiance to the #British flag to meet on common ground and learn to know each other". • Most of the #exhibition halls were intended to be temporary and were demolished afterwards, but the Palace of Engineering and the British Government Pavilion survived well into the 1970s. The Empire Pool became the #WembleyArena, and at the suggestion of the chair of the exhibition committee, Sir James Stevenson, the Empire Stadium was kept. It became #WembleyStadium, the iconic home of English football for almost a century. • This pictorial #map was drawn by Edward Bawden and Thomas Derrick, with a clear division of labour. Bawden was still a student @RoyalAcademyArts at the time and this was his first ever commission.
