Nearly half of our collection of antique maps date from the 19th century. This catalogue explores the development of informative – or infographic – maps throughout that period. Map publishers increasingly included decorative and scientific charts alongside their stock of geographical maps. Today, data visualization is ubiquitous but a century ago infographic maps were prepared by cartographers working within a very different set of design parameters. These early pieces are visually appealing and incredibly varied; this catalogue aims to contextualize their development within cartographic history.
